Live Performance on Screen: Truths and Style

In this presentation multi-camera director Jonathan Haswell will explore the dynamic art of directing cameras for live performance. Drawing from his extensive experience, Haswell will discuss the delicate balance between style, aesthetics, and audience engagement in translating live events to the screen. The presentation will delve into the visual grammar of live performance, addressing the “best” approaches to camera work, the ethical and creative decisions that shape a broadcast, and the pursuit of clarity and intimacy with the viewer. In an increasingly digital world, Haswell will emphasise the importance of maintaining strong screen principles while adapting to evolving technologies, ensuring the future of live performance on screen remains as captivating and true to its roots as ever.

Workshop

We are also delighted to be hosting a workshop led by Gemma Dixon and Jonathan Haswell at the Turner Sims Concert Hall, demonstrating the techniques involved in presenting a live multi-camera event. From selecting the right cameras and angles to framing and choreography, this session covers the essential choices, methods, and approaches that make these performances visually and sonically captivating.

Biographies

Jonathan Haswell is a multi-camera director with extensive experience. He worked for for the BBC for nearly twenty years, and since 2013 has worked for a variety of producers, independent companies and arts organisations both at the highest level, and on modest budgets. He has directed the cameras for many concerts, state ceremonial events, operas, ballets, contemporary dance and live music, jazz and drama events for TV, DVD, cinema, and the web. He specialises in live broadcasts of events as they happen, whether on a stage, in the studio, or on location.

Gemma Dixon is an Executive Producer with twenty-five years of experience in music, arts and high profile royal events broadcasting, which began at the BBC. She is founder of award-winning production company Maestro Broadcasting which specialises in high quality music and arts content for television, cinema, DVD and online. Maestro works with many of the UK’s leading orchestras, opera companies and artists, and Gemma produces their live-streamed concerts and events, bespoke films and ground-breaking animation projects for worldwide distribution. Maestro’s work can be seen on major TV channels and streaming platforms, helping the arts to reach large worldwide audiences.
